An apprenticeship is when you work full-time for an employer, whilst studying for a relevant qualification alongside it.
There are different levels of apprenticeship, depending on your education history and whether you want to complete one as an alternative to school or university.
If you want to get stuck into your career early, and the thought of staying on at school or going to university is not for you, then an apprenticeship is a great alternative.
Not only do you receive on-the-job training, you get paid a proper salary! Read on to see exactly where your apprenticeship can take you…
What industries can I do an apprenticeship in?
You might think of apprenticeships as only offering roles in a traditional trade, such as plumbing, construction and hospitality. However, in recent years there has been an increase in apprenticeships in all industries, with some of the UK’s top companies! For example…
Banking
Did you know that some of the UK’s largest banks and investment firms now offer apprenticeships? We’re talking the likes of J.P. Morgan, Barclays and HSBC – to name just a few.
You might think the only way to get into banking is through university – but that’s no longer the case. You can now start a career in banking as soon as you finish your GCSE’s.
With an apprenticeship in banking, you have the chance to have a career in commercial, investment, retail banking or more!
Health, Science and Pharmaceuticals

Become an Engineer
Engineering is a popular university degree course. But don’t be fooled, you can still pursue a career within this sector through an apprenticeship.

Get a degree
Degree apprenticeships are the new cool kids on the block. They’re popular as you don’t have to pay the traditional university fees you would with a regular university degree. They’re free!
It’s an opportunity for school and college leavers to leap straight into career, with an industry-designed degree and none of the debt.
How do they work?
Funding for degree apprenticeships is divided between the government, who pay two-thirds, and your employer. It’s like a full-time job, with the benefit of studying for a degree alongside it!
