  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves researching and implementing new software / applications in order to improve the productivity of colleagues within the business and provide business leads with a centralised area to access information on the financial performance of individual assets. Our business area works on projects nationwide including HS2!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The key skill area that I have developed is my communication skills. The business area has a wide variety of colleagues, all with differing expertise and levels of IT competency, therefore I have learnt to adapt my approach to explaining new systems to suit each individual colleague.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have loved my placement so far!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Balfour Beatty is an excellent company that provide a great placement programme. I have monthly calls with all the other students that are on placement at Balfour Beatty, and we have also had 4 in person meetings with site visits also booked for various different projects. This has allowed me to build my network with colleagues from different business units, whilst also making new friends and gaining a greater understanding of the business as a whole.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Balfour Beatty provide informative mandatory training, whilst also offering a host of optional training courses that are available to join. My manager has been very supportive and offered advice when needed!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My university have reached out multiple times whilst I have been on my placement to ensure that I am enjoying my experience and that I am making good progress.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My degree has so far helped me understand systems that are used within the business (as I had learnt to use them at university), whilst also giving me a theory base that I have applied to work scenarios.

  • Placement networking events with the other students on placement at BB.

  • The business has a great placement programme that allows you to develop new skills and meet new people whilst also ensuring that you have a high level of responsibility in meaningful projects.

  • If you are looking to apply for a placement here, do not hesitate. The company offers so many great opportunities to learn new skills and grow as a professional.
