My role was an apprentice Mechanical Engineer which involved myself in all areas of an engineering workshop specifically manual turning and milling. This involves given a technical drawing and creating the part from scratch.
I have learnt many new skills involved with engineering such as machining, hand skills, Computer aided design, fabrication and welding.
Working within a great team and being involved with exciting new tasks and being able to explore not just the engineering world but being involved in many differant environments across site.
DSTL made me feel very well valued and in my time here I have also recieved a DSTL thank you to show recognition for my hard work within projects undertaken.
I feel the apprenticeship programme is very well organised as the training and hands on experience was delegated very well as in the first year we predominantly spent at QinetiQs training centre and then gradually spend more time within the workshop at DSTL.
The training provider provided lots of great support by having regular meetings and providing very usefull guidance aswell as carrying out regular visits to my place of work.
My employer show a great willingness to help support and provide me with any tools, knowledge or experience I need to achieve the right tuition.
The salary given is alot higher compared to many other apprenticeships and as I was living at home at the time living costs where not very high.
DSTL has many opportuninties to be involved in activities outside of work such as football, sailing and skiing trips. I am currently a member of the gym located on site which I visit after work hours.
Yes
I would recommend and have recommended DSTL to a friend due to their excellent training and all the skills that I have learnt have been very beneficial.
I would recommend others to practice apptitude tests before applying and when in the interview try to relax and be yourself and think of any activities or hobbies that you are involved with which involve some technical based skills.
