  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Very fast Paced at the beginning. I was put onto a site that was nearing deadline Where there as a lot going on and not enough time for the people I was shadowing to properly show me what to do. However it gave me the opportunity to quickly learn the basics of my job role and helped me develop very quickly by doing the role rather than shadowing. I have been given some points of external help however i would recommend more regular check ups from the learning and development team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt the role and responsibilities of an engineer as well as developed a strong knowledge of the processes that take place on site. I have learnt key technical skills and the importance of health and safety in the construction industry. JN Bentley have sent me on multiple training courses to ensure that I have a strong understanding of my role for future career progression.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My program is a block release program in which I am sent to study each month so that I gain the technical knowledge and qualifications required to progress in my career as an engineer. However in construction the working hours are long and it was a shock to me when I initially began. However soon I have adapted my schedule and allows me to keep a good routine with a good work life balance.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is structured well with the block release being a nice break up of work and studying. However for my role specifically it is difficult to set time a side to focus on work that I receive from college due to the fast paced environment that I am in and the requirements of my role as a site engineer.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has paired me up the an engineer who is supposed to oversee everything I do and help me with and question I have, passing as much knowledge and experience as possible to me to accelerate my development. I believe from my employer there should be more regular check ups to help with work load.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • All the support is only during the weeks we are with the training provider. It is quite hard to get a hold of the lecturer to ask for help regarding course work. Sometimes it is difficult to follow the topic of conversation and understanding what the task required is. If we were to be given an check list in order of what needs to be completed and an example it would be very useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It doesn't help me as much as I would have hoped for it to so far. There are a few ties to some of the work that occurs. However it does not completely relate the work my employer currently does. This course will give us a wide range of information however it is majority of the time very brief.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My employer enrols all new graduates and apprentices onto the Early Careers Development Program which is supposed to develop our social skills by interacting with other apprentice and graduates in different roles. Which allows a greater understanding of all the roles within the company and the range of roles available. However other than this there is not much else that the company has to offer that I have been made aware of.
