Planning, organising and supervising works on the construction site. this includes working to health and safety standards, checking the workforce and programme, ensuring everything is running smoothly. i commonly brief the team, listen to any concerns, liaise with designers, engineers, the client (etc.) to ensure everyone is on the same page and aware of works commencing.
i have developed drastically throughout my apprenticeship. from the first day walking through the doors, i have been challenged and encouraged to think with initiative and make critical decisions. this has given me confidence in my actions to lead a team and trust the constructing process. no two days are the same therefore have learnt to be versatile and prepared.
i do enjoy the programme i am on, seeing projects go through critical stages and having a key say in the decisions made. i have lead various teams to tackle issues in sensitive areas, giving me that sense of achievement in the work i do. i have struggled in small aspects between my company and the educating facilities, but in general this have been good.
the programme itself has been basic and straightforward. despite this, communications between my company and the educational facility Bedford college has lacked, with last minute changes being applied. this has caused issues understanding my whereabouts trying to meet expectations from both my employer plus educational facility. i do hope this will be different for the younger apprentices on this route.
My employer has been supportive in regards to placing me on a project where i would be most challenged but also have that network of support around me. i have been very fortunate when doing my assignments to have such a diverse level of professionals under one roof in which could offer me support when needed.
my training provider in the end has enabled me to achieve my level 4. despite this, it had been a difficult journey, with the teaching staff not displaying as much confidence in their teachings as one would hope. with the scope of teachings constantly changing and being unclear, this was a very challenging way to receive teachings on the industry.
in general, the qualification has taught me about Revit and 3d modelling. although i do not use such software's, this has enabled me to read drawings and identify errors. likewise, for project planning , this has taught me how to use gantt charts which i still use daily so this has helped.
I have attended various social and networking events hosted by my company. Balfour Beatty have been very useful in this aspect, by enrolling me on the gold duke of Edinburgh scheme, this has enabled me to meet other colleagues around the UK and learn about each other in various environments. in addition to this, the early careers scheme they have placed me on had been brilliant, taking me around the UK to see other projects and other individuals, this truly has helped with networking.
Yes
the various ways you can progress within the company is unprecedented. the training they have given me internally and externally ahs enabled me to conduct my role on a day to day basis to a high quality standard. i am grateful for my role here and am looking forward to my further endeavours within this company.
don't be afraid to apply here, if the role you initially found isn't for you, there are plenty of opportunities to change to other departments. make sure you find what you are interested in and exploit this. this is a great place to learn about the construction industry first hand.
