  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Subcontract Management. Cost Management - CVR's, Forecasting. Going through the change control processes and dealing with variations with the client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had very limited commercial knowledge as well as knowledge of the industry and Power transmission before beginning my career at Balfour Beatty. I have also developed communication skills, teamwork and numerical skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone if they wanted to enter a field which had the choice available.

    10/10

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have study days on a Friday every week and regular catch ups with my manager in between mid and end of year PDR's where we set targets and identify short and long term goals and how I can achieve those.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone within the business is extremely helpful and supportive. Balfour Beatty drive for the development of apprentices/grads and it is motivating to see this. There is a great community feel between other apprentices as well as within smaller teams (eg. commercial team/project teams) where people are always available to answer queries.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Weekly calls & 1 to 1's available at request. Interim reviews approx. every 12 weeks to ensure everything such as assignments and off the job learning is up to date.

    7/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It allows me to gain a deeper understanding for not just my role but the wider industry. I can apply the knowledge to tasks I carry out day to day as well as within discussions with other employees.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Events held at least once a month at my office - can network with other employees. Also other opportunities such as Employer recognition events (business wide - meet others from the whole of BB not just within my business unit or the UK) and Early Careers events (meet other apprentices/grads from across the UK).

    10/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As much as I don't have anything to compare to as this is my first job within the industry, I could not think of one part of my experience so far which has been negative. BB provide so many opportunities which you could not get anywhere else.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • Be yourself, understand the role you are applying for (research the role and business) and make it known that you want that role and it is genuinely something you are interested in. Someone who appears to just be wanting an apprenticeship rather than showing they are driven to know more about an available position and keen to learn will not be a favoured candidate.
