I am usually carrying out typical quantity surveyor type tasks, such as payments, package procurement, remeasure exercises etc. I have taken on smaller packages of my own whilst also getting involved in larger packages too.
Yes, I have learnt many new skills during my placement year plus honed the skills I had acquired from university. These are skills such as measuring skills, examining skills, plus also my presentation skills.
I have very much enjoyed my programme so far, I have learnt many new things and met so many colleagues that are willing to help every step of the way. I would recommend a placement year with Kier to anybody.
It has been a very structured introduction into the industry, with many training sessions to ease me in. I have also been given a mentor who has been providing my work load over the past 6 months, he has been very particular with what tasks are set and when as progression continues to grow.
I receive lots of support whenever I need it. There is a lot of support already put in place without me needing to seek it, however if there is anything extra I require I can always count on Kier to deliver the support I need.
I only joined Kier after finishing my second year of University and have taken a gap year to gain this experience, so it is difficult to say the support that has been given / will be given to me. However, Kier have always supported me in the catch up meetings I have had with the University, Kier have always been there to explain my continued progress.
My two years experience at university definitely gave me the foundations I needed to excel in my gap year, however the last six months in this gap year have taken my skills to another level, and has also given me confidence that this is the career path that I want to follow after obtaining my degree.
Yes, this is plentiful at Kier. In my first six months at Kier I have been involved in 3 social meals and 4 networking events. I am also aware of football games that happen every month which is an open invitation to all Kier employees
Yes
I would recommend Kier group to anybody wanting to get the best experience into the construction industry. Anybody joining will be able to guarantee that they are supported every step of the way and will gain many skills to progress in their particular field.
Present your enthusiasm and be willing to learn and embrace new things, whether you are new into the industry or 30 years in.
