As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor my role is to assist in managing project costs and ensuring financial efficiency. My duties involve payment processing to subcontractors, tendering, and site visits for measurement taking for valuations. I also offer support in cost forecasting and final accounts that form an integral component of the Value Cost Reconciliation (VCR) process. Additionally, I aid in reconciling project finances annually to ensure record accuracy with regard to actual expenditure.
As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, I have refined my skills in Excel to forecast cost, monitor cost, and project reconciliation. Regular communication with subcontractors and suppliers has enhanced my communication and negotiation skills, contract and tender management has enhanced my commercial awareness, and I have gained more confidence in site measurement, valuations, solving problems, and producing correct financial reports.
I enjoy my programme as it provides me with valuable practical experience in managing project cost and financial planning. The combination of office and site visits makes my job engaging, and it is rewarding to know how my efforts contribute towards the progression of projects.
My programme is well-structured, providing a good balance between practical experience and professional development
I receive strong support from my employer, with guidance from senior quantity surveyors who help me develop my skills in cost management, forecasting, and contract administration
I receive a good level of support from my training provider while working towards my qualifications. There are opportunities to ask questions and seek clarification when needed, ensuring I understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of quantity surveying.
The qualification complements my hands-on experience, enabling me to approach challenges with a stronger understanding of industry best practices. It also boosts my confidence in decision-making and problem-solving, making me more effective in supporting project success.
Working with colleagues and students to raise awareness about degree apprenticeships is an example of an extra-curricular activity at my work. It allows me to network, mentor others, and contribute to the professional development of future talent
