  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role at Volker Wessels, I serve as a pivotal member of the commercial team. I am responsible for negotiating monetary values for change events (CEs) up the line with the main contractor, documenting meeting minutes, and coordinating with contractors, the supply chain, and essential team members. Furthermore, I oversee various subcontractor accounts, which entails agreeing on quotes, reviewing compensations events (CEs) and early warning notices (EWNs), and providing instructions for their respective work assignments.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Volker Wessels provides very regular training that is vital to my CPD. I have learnt many skills from negotiating / interacting with key personnel to a high professional standard of excel. My most recent training was NEC contract clause training which is vital as it is something I rely on daily.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the program, as Volker Wessels treats me as an integral part of the organization rather than a student which helps me to adapt to the working environment. They provide me with opportunities to make mistakes, from which I can gain valuable lessons and insights from. Also, the university provides me with adequate education although most of my learning comes from the work place environment and putting thoughts into practice.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe that the program is structured very well as I have enough freedom to progress at a steady rate and I'm not forced to run before I can walk. There is plenty of support both in and out of the workplace. We also have frequent progress reviews and ongoing conversations about my progression.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a great deal of support from the employer due to frequent bi-weekly reviews and conversations where we can discuss progression and any concerns I may have. This is further backed up with key quarterly reviews with the university and employer.

  • There is plenty of support from the training provider (university) as they run lectures and classes weekly where I can learn. They also provide out side of lecture lessons for any issues we may have. They are also very easy and quick to contact if there were any problems we might have.
