  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • So far my role is to get a confident understanding of each department in construction whilst learning and developing my leadership roles, managing responsibilities, and shadowing my mentors to get a better understanding of construction methodology and our policies. Currently I am in estimating where i work with quotes, produce take off measurements from drawings, complete subcontractor comparisons and prepare documents for meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt to manage my time more effectively and get more done in the day than i used to. i have become more organised creating a plan of works for the next day with ongoing tasks i couldn't finish the day before. I have gave out presentations to an audience with over 150 listeners listening to my path in Vinci. My people skills has developed throughout my course as i have participated in behavioural management health and safety training course as well as during my site management rotation where i managed different work packages and enhanced my confidence in doing things right when no one is looking.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The team around me also make it more enjoyable as everyone is tackling challenges together no matter how experienced you are there's always more to learn and greater positions to strive for.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In terms of the overall plan of the scheme is structured well, just the execution of moving between different departments and not having specific dates where you need to integrate into the different needs some working on. Also I have no idea which the next rotation will be nor the manager to plan the movement between 2 departments. it would be better if each apprentice could have a program for each rotation and the managers to contact on the plan at each date.

  • Everyone goes above and beyond for me and i am very grateful for it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • If training provider means the college that we go to, not much help. A teacher we had for 3/4 of our HNC course who has now left wasn't any help whatsoever until the last month or 2 before she left. During the site management rotation where i was extremely busy with site there was miss communication between me and the teacher in which it cost me 1 of my assignments. After reviewing the lessons and the assignments she handed out before she left, the main teacher of the course which also reviewed our feedback then replied that she took the assignments too far as if we were on our final year of our uni degrees. nevertheless everyone on site supported me through areas i needed help on. The college Representative who checks up on us every 2-3 months was helpful and really supportive when situations got really stressful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification gave me some knowledge in construction that i never knew which helps me today when talking about the basic construction methodology like the different types of piles used in substructure. There were some topics that did not have much relevance to the work we conduct day by day but there was a few that were relevant as they tie in with our policies like sustainability etc.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a few social activities throughout the year like charitable events that are not required to go but we still go for the benefit of those who we are raising money for.
