"As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at BAM Nuttall, my role involves assisting with cost management, procurement, and financial reporting on construction projects. On a day-to-day basis, I review subcontractor invoices, track project costs, and support senior QSs with valuations and forecasting. I also attend site meetings, liaise with suppliers, and help with contract administration. My responsibilities vary depending on project needs, giving me exposure to different aspects of quantity surveying while developing my technical and commercial skills.
"During my apprenticeship, I have developed my cost management and commercial awareness skills, particularly in subcontractor payments and valuations. I have also improved my communication and negotiation skills through liaising with suppliers and site teams. Additionally, I have gained a stronger understanding of contract administration and financial forecasting in construction
I enjoy my apprenticeship as it provides hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply what I learn in my degree to real projects. The variety of tasks keeps the role engaging, and I appreciate the support from colleagues. While some tasks can be repetitive, the overall experience has been rewarding
verall, the programme is well-structured, with a clear progression path and a good balance between on-the-job learning and academic study. However, managing site work alongside university assignments can be challenging at times, especially when workloads overlap. Despite this, I receive support from mentors, which helps me stay on track.
receive good support from my employer, with regular check-ins and guidance from my manager. They are always available for advice and help when I need it, whether it's with technical issues or balancing work and university commitments. However, at times, additional structured support would be beneficial during busy periods.
"The support from my training provider is generally good. They provide regular feedback on assignments and are available for guidance on academic matters. However, at times, the communication between university and work commitments can be challenging, and more proactive support would be helpful during busy periods.
"I feel that my qualification significantly helps me perform better in my role. The academic knowledge I gain complements the practical experience from my apprenticeship, allowing me to approach tasks with a deeper understanding of the principles behind them. The coursework also enhances my problem-solving and analytical skills, which I can apply directly to my day-to-day work.
Currently, there aren't many extra-curricular activities available at my work, such as social events or sports teams. While there are occasional professional networking opportunities, these are limited. It would be great to have more options for team-building or extracurricular involvement to further connect with colleagues and develop professionally outside of work.
Yes
"I would recommend BAM Nuttall to a friend because of the strong support system for apprentices, the exposure to real-world projects, and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. The company provides a good mix of practical and academic experience, helping you develop both technical skills and commercial awareness in the construction industry.
"I’d advise applicants to thoroughly research the company and its projects, as having a good understanding of BAM Nuttall's work and values will help you stand out. Be prepared to demonstrate both your technical skills and your ability to work well in a team. Also, make sure to show your eagerness to learn, as the company values continuous development and growth.
