  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day-to-day activities involve general quantity surveying tasks such as checking and creating cost-related documents, including cost plans and applications for payment. This also includes attending site visits to assess variations and monitor progress on site. Additionally, I complete measurements and take-offs on buildings to understand the cost implications.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship, I have learned an abundance of personal, professional, and technical skills. The past year and a half has been a significant learning curve, encouraging me to become more confident and teaching me the importance of dedication, perseverance, and interpersonal skills. I have gained the ability to communicate effectively. I have also developed my computing skills, including proficiency in Excel and Word formatting, as well as using professional language when speaking to clients. Additionally, I have acquired general office skills. In terms of technical skills, I have learned quantification and measurement techniques, legal skills, contract administration, and the technology behind construction, among many others.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate my enjoyment of this program as an 8. I still believe there are improvements to be made regarding exposure to all aspects of quantity surveying. However I am genuinely thankful for all the support Mott MacDonald has provided on my apprenticeship journey so far.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think the general structure is fairly well developed, but improvements could be made to streamline the process so that people receive the correct amount of exposure to aspects of the role.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have found that my employer has continued to support me regarding multiple personal and work-related issues, providing support and offering advice where needed. There are also extra benefits from joining Mott Macdonald, which help in my experiences.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Alongside Mott Macdonald, UCEM has provided Plenty of Support regarding general issues and issues around neurodiversity. They have been great to speak to and provided all the help I needed to progress effectively.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This is essential to the in-depth knowledge required to complete the role. The university provides the in-depth knowledge that isn't picked during working hours or if it takes a long time as university learning is focused. Also, generally, the aspects of quantity surveying are extremely varied, so one time you may be learning about something at university that you are also learning about at work, and then other times it may be the opposite. However, university has definitely helped me as a QS.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At my work, there are plenty of extracurricular activities to get involved in across the year, whether these are social activities like go karting, Bowling, Football, or Cricket. There are also social events like giving back to the local communities by helping at schools, hospices, carer fares, and many more.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Mott Macdonald has been extremely supportive throughout my early carer in QSing if it wasnt for them then my early progression wouldnt be possible. They have allowed to create many technical and professional skills when developing many strong interpersonal relationships.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • If you are applying to Mott Macdonald, Ensure that you align with their PRIDE values and can demonstrate these. Have a Good understanding of the role you are applying for and be able to explain this during an interview. Be yourself, talk about things that interest you and that can help you bring skills to the company.
