I am a Steelwork Apprentice. I am in furness college at the moment and work 5 days a week (37 hours a week). This consists of theory and practical work days in classrooms and in the workshop.
I have learnt new physical skills like welding, burning, grinding, as well as developing my mental skills like communicating and being more resilient and out going.
I enjoy my apprenticeship and what i have to do for it and enjoy my work but being in the college setting can be challenging as there’s not always tutors to teach us so with some areas i don’t feel as though i have all of the knowledge needed.
BAE as a company is very well organised as they are easy to communicate with and they are extremely supportive and helpful if you need help and they support each apprentice equally considering the amount of apprentices they have to look after. The college on the other hand is not organised and we often have missing tutors and work that has not been taught that should have been.
I have been extremely supported by my employers regarding help in my work but also help with mental health. They have been really good with helping me with any issues i have brought up or any situations where I needed help.
The tutors in college can sometimes be helpful, however it would be better if we had people from BAE teaching us and people who are steelworkers as well as changing the curriculum to just steelwork and doing things that we should expect to do in placement or sask.
Yes
They are a really good company to work for and the job can make you feel extremely proud to be apart of. It’s also an amazing opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge.
Be yourself and make sure to research about the company and the trade you’re interested in before you apply.
