  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the degree apprenticeship on a day release basis, it is helping me learning the knowledge and then putting this into practise at work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There have been some issues with timetabling this year which have been fed back to the university, and also we are doing 4 modules and some of the teaching crosses over between modules. It has been a much better year this year in that we are getting more support from the tutors.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from my employer, being assigned a mentor and having 3 monthly reviews as well as the support received by my line manager, trying to link up what I am learning at university with what I am doing within my role.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Lots of support, offers of 1 to 1 sessions with the tutors if needed, reviews with my line manager and work based learning coach from the university, we also have an academic advisor which we can go to with any issues as well as the course leader.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I definitely feel like it is having a positive impact on my role, I have gained a wealth of knowledge since starting at university and putting this knowledge into practice has definitely been useful. There are some parts of the learning that don't link with my job as I work in railway and the course is predominantly about house building.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is an early careers programme, the big rail diversity challenge, various volunteering opportunities as well as professional networking events.

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good place to work, with a supportive environment always looking to support and enhance staff members.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to VolkerWessels?
  • Just be yourself and make sure you ask lots of questions - no question is a stupid one. Do some research around the company and what they do as there are lots of sectors you can get involved in.
