As a project controls apprentice on the Transpennine Route Upgrade, my role involves supporting the management of project costs, risks and changes. Day-to-day, I assist in data analysis, progress reporting, and maintaining accurate project documentation to ensure the work stays on track and within scope.
I have developed skills in software such as excel, PowerBI, ProjectWise and power automate. I have also developed existing skills such as communication and teamwork.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme as it offers a great balance of learning and real-world application. Being part of a major infrastructure project like the Transpennine Route Upgrade is exciting, and I enjoy experiencing being part of different teams within the project.
The programme is well-organised, with a clear structure that combines on-the-job learning and formal training. Regular check-ins, and scheduled university days ensure I can develop my skills effectively while contributing to the project’s success. It provides a clear pathway for growth and progression.
I receive a lot of support from my employer, including guidance from my line manager and other colleagues, regular feedback, and access to training opportunities. They encourage my development by providing resources, answering questions, and involving me in meaningful tasks that help me grow professionally.
The training provider offers strong support, including structured learning materials, regular progress reviews, and access to tutors who are available to answer questions or clarify concepts. They ensure the training aligns with my role and provide guidance to help me meet qualification requirements effectively.
My qualification through the training provider complements my role well, providing theoretical knowledge that enhances my practical understanding. It equips me with tools and techniques for project controls, like risk management and scheduling, which directly improve my ability to contribute effectively to the projects I have worked on
Yes, through my time on the apprenticeship programme, I have attended social events, and professional networking events, as well as in person training events to meet other apprentices and graduates.
