  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working on a variety of different projects, undertaking various different business analysis tasks such as gathering requirments, performing change impact assessments, creating option papers etc. I am required to work with stakeholders at various different levels within the organisation from operational staff to director level. I have been involved with piloting a new veterinary management system across RSPCA sites which has involved me travelling to those sites to provide hands on support. I have also been involved in testing new solutions to establish whether they are fit for purpose or or whether any changes made to be made. Working on several different projects has allowed me to work alongside project managers, testers, developers, subject matter experts, product owners etc. it has given me an understading of the roles and responsibilities of each of the roles as well as an understanding of how the roles work together and alongside the business analyst to achieve project objectives.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt and continue to learn new skills daily. I have learnt technical tools and techniques such as how to create a business case or perform a PESTLE analysis, throught to softer skills such as how to facilitate a workshop. It has been useful to be able to practice the techniques learnt through the apprenticeship in real life settings, as I feel this solidifies the learning.

  • I enjoyed the programme as it gave me the confidence to apply for a higher position, knowing that I have been able to develop the skills needed to fullfil the role. Being able to test my knowledge was heplful to solidify my understanding of each of the topics and techniques. Having internal and external mentors was also invaluable to access guidance and reassurance when I needed it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programe was well organised, I was briefed on what to expect along the way, regarding exams, courses, final project deadlines etc so there were no surprises. I felt that each module built on my existing knowledge, so it felt challenging but managable. I also had full support from my manager who monitored my workload closely and we made adjustments as needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I felt fully supported by my employer and my internal mentor. My workload was monitored closely and I felt I had enough time to work on my apprenticeship. I felt supported when it came to my final project as the RSPCA supported me in finding the best project match to fit the perameters of my final project which set me up for a successful 6 weeks and allowed me to pass my course with a distinction. I was also given the time I needed in order to complete the project to a good enough standard in line with the assessment criteria.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSPCA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There is a sense of shared purpose within the RSPCA that is felt across all employees regardless of the job role. There is a supportive environment and one in which encourages the development of their staff (for example, through apprenticeships). The RSPCA is striving to become a more inclusive organisation which I have really felt a shift towards which further supports the RSPCA being a great place to work. Not only that but the RSPCA has ambitious and exciting strategic plans for the future which provides a shared of purpose and pride in the work we do for animals.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSPCA?
  • Be authentic, open and passionate but also bring lived examples of experience that you have got, rather than focusing solely on your love for animals.
