  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have a title as business analyst. On a day to day, I do my apprenticeship work, self study around financial crime and the finance sector in general as well as supporting project work by making powerpoints and producing minutes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have started using microsoft programmes more which I have more knowledge than I did using them. Wouldn't say I have learnt a new skill or developed any of my existing ones, no opportunity to shadow or develop during the apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It's okay. I feel there is a lot of pointless tick box exercises which make it less enjoyable and there is a lack of support and engagement to really allow an apprentice to thrive.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At first it seemed structured. But now coming towards the end we are being told things we should of been told from day one as it is now causing extra unnecessary work. Unorganised and not enough structure between Kaplan and the leads in HSBC leaving apprentices confused and feeling unsupported.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • It varies. I would say on the lower scale. It doesn't seem like the managers and teams we get given to really know and understand how to support an apprentice and don't understand the level of care and help we may need. Even if help is asked for, it is like you are in the way which makes you less likely to ask in the future. Lack of support and worry as I was hired onto a permanent position contract but now this is being questioned and left with the uncertainty of not having a job but with a mortgage to pay.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My first talent coach I would say lack of support but since having a new talent coach, she is fantastic and really helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don't feel like my company give me the opportunity to use any of the information I have learnt as I don't get the opportunity to do any in depth work. So I would say, the information I am learning is great for an understanding of the financial services but it isn't used practically as I feel like I get jobs that a part time employee would possibly get, there is no way to apply or progress through this.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, they are always advertising on our intranet of groups you can get involved with. They also have a gym that promote social events and group workouts on.

    8/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's tough as in some ways I would recommend them and others I wouldn't. I feel I have had a bad experience compared to other apprentices. The company is great and offers amazing opportunities and benefits as an employee. However, I don't feel coming in as an apprentice, you get the same level of respect as you would as a general employee and the uncertainty of being put a risk and being made redundant is extremely high and I don't like how unstable it could potentially be.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • It is a great company and offers a lot of opportunities, however, the support as an apprentice needs work. I would say speak up as much as you can to get that support and to get the opportunities you want to.
