Software engineer within teams around the business, Involvement with the software development lifecycle depending on project status (early stage requirement design, implementation and development of software, testing etc.). Assigned work to assist in the development of project software - either guided via other members of the team or personal tasks which I take full responsibility for.
Due to interactions with team members, stakeholders, and other companies, I have developed keen networking and communication skills. Working on live projects and software has also resulted in a strong development around the knowledge and skills required of a software engineer - inclusive of learning new languages, methodologies and toolsets.
I believe that the EDAS software engineering program is incredibly well made to allow apprentices to understand and take part in industry software engineering - with BAE systems providing me with an incredibly special chance to join live projects and involve myself directly.
Placements are organised to last around 6 months, with a final placement being a year long to support the final year of university. I have 2 days working at university, 2.5 days working on placement and half a day dedicated to diploma - all of which is sufficient time to develop my knowledge in all areas strongly.
BAE systems routinely check in on my progress and wellbeing, providing ample opportunity for further assistance if necessary, along with providing work plans to work around my needs if necessary. I am always provided with the assistance if I need it.
While university can differ based on lecturers, and material, UCLAN has assisted me with my knowledge around software engineering and i have applied what i have learnt at university into my live work.
I feel strongly that my work at UCLAN has helped me develop my understanding and apply this knowledge to my role as a software engineer, utilising the skills learnt at university into my live job.
There are a plethora of social activities organised by the company, departments and early careers, along with professional networking events. There are also stretch apprentice tasks that are created if apprentices are willing to take on more work.
Yes
Incredibly friendly workplace, incredible opportunity for software engineering, live projects that I feel proud to have been part of.
Whilst it may seem daunting to jump head first into the work, it is worth it.
