  • Undertake the same work as a trainee solicitor / newly qualified lawyer working on a varied range of matters for clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The complexity of work I have been exposed to has significantly improved in regards to drafting, research, client facing advice and general legal technical skills as I have developed on my apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed moving round the different teams and having year long seats, as I feel this has given me a very good knowledge of the different practice areas available and what they offer as a career path. The complexity and variety of work has been a highlight. Being trusted and challenged keeps the program exciting and ensures I continue to develop.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Being the first cohort of apprentices has meant to program has improved and developed and we have been able to shape these changes. Overall, my experience as part of the first cohort has been a very good one.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have exceptional support in place with our early careers program manager and apprenticeship sponsor in Manchester which has really enhanced the program and experience.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have a skills coach in place who we catch up with on a regular basis. They are committed to us getting the best out of our program from work and university.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There is crossover in various modules we study at uni, contract law for example. This deepens understanding of the practicalities of our day job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of team and office socials to get involved in. There are also sporting events such as 5 a side, runs and obstacle course style events we compete in as an office. Equally, there are always a range of networking events with clients and professionals in Manchester.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • High quality work and friendly office culture which is an especially good place to train as an apprentice or trainee due to the collaborative nature of working.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper?
  • Speak with people at the firm to get an insight to what it is like to work here. Bring your authentic self to the application process and highlight your strengths and what makes you unique. Also, having a collaborative mindset is incredibly important so be able to highlight this.
