Currently, I work as an IT Consultant within IBM which makes up four days of my week working on client-facing projects. While working on project I use a broad range of technical and business skills developed through on-the-job training and formal learning during my one day of university study a week.
During my time so far IBM has helped further develop my soft skills through client convocation-focused courses and speaking to clients while on project. The technical knowledge and experience I have gained while on project and during the completion of my university module has been immense. Key Skills Developed: Software Development Data Analysis Cybersecurity Cloud Computing IT Support Project Management Business and System Analysis Networking and Infrastructure AI and Automation
I massively enjoy my program and gain a strong sense of fulfilment from overcoming challenges and the sense of autonomy my workplace provides.
IBM is extremely well-organised and highly professional. However, my training provider Northeastern University is very unorganised and poorly structured which can be frustrating at times, especially with the high workload you have as an apprentice.
My employer is extremely accommodating and goes above and beyond to help me perform my best in both client-facing projects and the completion of my degree.
My training provider provides a basic level of support and even though the staff are very willing to help the lack of structure and poor overall organisation hinder their ability to support effectively.
I feel that the training provides a basic level of understanding and technical ability. Which is enough to get a step up when taking on tasks within a project be it technical or non-technical.
There is a strong push from the different communities within IBM to encourage extra-curricular activities, especially within the apprentice community. In addition, while working on a project you will likely have the regular team meet-ups where social activities and team building make up a large part of these meet-ups.
