  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an engineering apprentice at Devonport, Plymouth, every day presents new challenges and learning opportunities. One day I will be focusing on paperwork whilst on others I can be out on site surveying all day. This dynamic nature of my role keeps me engaged, as I am constantly exposed to new techniques, experiences, and professionals who broaden my understanding of the field. This hands-on experience not only enhances my technical skills but also motivates me to push myself further, continuously learning and growing on my journey toward becoming a certified civil engineer.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • YES! Working on this large, busy and unique construction site in Plymouth has helped me develop new skills every day. I’ve learned to adapt to different tasks, work with a variety of people, and gain confidence in what I do. The experience has made me more aware of how things come together on-site and has helped me improve my problem-solving and communication skills. The feedback from my colleges also helped me develop for future as well as constant communication with my company BAM.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Yes, I really enjoy my programme, especially because of the structured approach it provides. The block release system creates a great balance between work and study, allowing me to apply what I learn in college or university directly to real projects. Regular feedback from my company helps me understand what I am doing well and where I can improve, giving me clear direction and confidence in my progress. The ongoing support and communication make the experience even more rewarding, as I know I am on the right path and continuously developing my skills.

  • My programme is well-structured and organised, providing a clear balance between work and college/uni. The block release system ensures I can fully focus on my studies during college/university periods while gaining valuable hands-on experience on-site. There is a clear plan outlining what I need to achieve with regular reviews to help track my progress.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a high level of support from my employer, which helps me progress. Regular feedback sessions provide guidance on what I am doing well and where I can improve. There is always someone available to answer questions or provide advice whether its a manager or experienced colleague. The company also ensures I have access to the right training and resources, making me feel valued and supported throughout my apprenticeship.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive strong support from my training provider, with regular feedback and clear communication to help me stay on track. Having direct contact with my college tutors and my line manager makes it easy to ask questions and seek guidance whenever needed. Feedback is provided consistently, and if I require further clarification, I can quickly reach out for additional support ensuring I always have the resources and direction.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is highly beneficial in helping me perform better. It provides me with a strong foundation, which I can then apply directly to tasks on-site. Learning the principles of engineering, construction methods, and industry standards through my training provider has improved my problem-solving skills and technical understanding.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • BAM provides many extra-curricular activities for their employees for people to get involved with bringing them closer together outside of work. Having sports teams and simple days out improves communication between the team making them more confident. I find these activities great as I enjoy meeting new people especially in the company.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAM to a friend as they provide a well structured apprenticeship with lots of feedback ensuring you correctly complete it to a high standard. This feedback assures you are going in the right direction and BAM provides plenty of support for you not only regarding the course itself but life outside of work if needed. The BAM community is super friendly and supportive answering any questions you may have to the best of their ability. I would and have recommended BAM to a friend.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • I would provide advise to research the company first and see what interests them as BAM is a massive company that provides many roles. When applying for a job with BAM they will require a well structured CV with decent grade and past experience but most importantly during the interview they should be themselves and not be shy to speak or engage.
