  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I worked between the learning & development, assessment centre and organisational development teams at the council, I answer queries in our online learning inbox, I use finance systems to bill external companies for training and to pay for registrations with external learning bodies.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to present my work and interact with colleagues from various areas in the council and this has helped me develop my communications skills and my confidence. I have gained more experience with multiple Microsoft applications, my attention to detail has improved through reports I have created.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying my programme a great deal, as I feel the support that has been offered by both my workplace and training provider has been wonderful. The teams I work with have been extremely welcoming and are always available if I need some help with a task and I have been given a wide variety of tasks to gain experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The way that college organised the sessions was well thought out, they flowed well each month so I felt that I could build my knowledge well. Since they changed the sessions to be a full day rather than one afternoon a month, I felt I learnt more as we could discuss upcoming assignments and it felt less rushed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I have received from my team, colleagues and the manager's I have worked under has been fantastic, if I have ever had any questions there was always someone available to answer it, they have given me support where it was needed for my assignments and nothing has been too much.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My trainer has always given me informative feedback on any tasks/assignments that I have submitted. If I have had any questions they have been answered within a few days and given the number of learners they have I appreciated how fast I would get a response.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it has helped me perform in my role a great deal, as I moved into a completely new sector when I started my apprenticeship so it has helped me see how skills I had from previous jobs link in with what I am currently doing. Completing the apprenticeship alongside learning my new role has really helped me cement the knowledge that I have been taught as well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are a range of employee networks that are available to get involved in such as the employee experience group and the young employees network, when I started my apprenticeship I had the opportunity to get involved with a training exercise that was for all office based staff, I have had the chance to be involved with our long service and apprenticeship awards, I have also been involved with the planning of a face to face induction for new starters.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The organisation I work for has lots of opportunities for upskilling, they are committed to providing apprenticeships where ever possible and they are very supportive when it comes to helping staff complete their apprenticeships. They care about the area and are always looking for ways that it can be improved.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barnsley Council?
  • To do some research into the plans for the future of the company, read about their values and beliefs to be prepared for the interview and to look carefully at the job profile that is provided and make sure that they have provided good evidence and examples of how they meet criteria to potentially get an interview.
