  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work servicing and maintaining aircraft for the Virgin Atlantic Airways fleet. I am assigned to a team of 2-3 engineers and get experience on the aircraft. I also do a leadership apprenticeship involving chairing meetings, developing Skills Knowledges and Behaviours to prepare me to lead a team of engineers in the future when I get my CAA B1.1 License.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I learned many leadership skills and models, developed engineering skills and knowledge and aviation skills and knowledge.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my programme, it had teething problems as I was in the starting year but we worked together to sort every issue that came up and improve it for future years which I believe has happened.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It has had some teething problems with it being a newer course, but they have been addressed and amended as they came up. I believe it is well organised now.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel I have had more than adequate support from my employers at Virgin and Impellam and Raise the Bar.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel I received all the support I needed to pass my qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has allowed me to consider why leaders act how they do, and has prepared me for when I need to step into that role in the future. I have also picked up a lot of aircraft maintenance experience which is a great help in this industry as experience is king.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I attended a charity dragon boat, have had the opportunity to network through the apprenticeship workshops, have gave talks to my old university, and have had the chance to mentor new grads and get involved with promoting STEM Mentorship’s.

  • Yes

  • I have had a positive overall experience and have secured qualifications and employment in an esteemed employer in my field in Virgin Atlantic through impellam.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Impellam Group?
  • Be yourself, be honest and upfront. You don’t need to be a trained leader or an experienced engineer, you just need to be willing and able to learn, show up and grow. They train you to be the rest.
