My Day-to-Day role involves supporting exciting projects by engaging in procurement, scheduling and management activities. This is in-office 2 days a week, with one full day at University. This work will vary from week-to-week depending on the project and is always exciting and meaningful!
Since starting as a project management apprentice, I have been taught and mentored to be competent with Microsoft projects, learned the ins and outs of procurement activities, as well as gaining confidence and learning presentation and negotiation skills - as well as developing confidence and technical understanding.
Since joining Babcock 6 months ago, I have enjoyed every single day I've been at work! The combination of a full day of university with 4 days at work means that you will never be bored! The impact and seriousness of work combined with a kind team makes working for Babcock an excellent experience.
The degree apprenticeship programme encompasses four six-month placements and then extended placements later into the programme. Babcock is very pro-apprentice and so being integrated into programmes is seamless and work is always useful for developing skills and gaining experience. Having a line and placement manager is also a massive bonus.
Babcock as an employer, particularly for apprentices, is a company built around support. With a placement-based review, official feedback is at least bi-annual. In my experience however, I have found my managers to go above and beyond - having regular 1-to-1 meetings to discuss performance and let me know I was heading in the right direction,
University Centre Weston (A UWE campus in Weston-Super-Mare) has been excellent at proving in-depth lessons and outside of lesson support. The team surrounding our work-based portfolio have demonstrated a genuine care and compassion for our mental and academic wellbeing and have empowered me to achieve the best grades possible.
I believe the multiple qualifications I will receive (PFQ, PMQ, Project Management BSC and the apprenticeship itself) will enable me to perform the role to the very best of my ability, as it will provide me with the tools and skillset to schedule, conflict resolve, procure and support engineering activities. I would not be able to perform my role to a high standard without them.
Babcock provides many opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities. One such example is that most teams have regular social events that can be partaken in, as well as Christmas parties and regular apprentice get-togethers!
Yes
Babcock is a company that cares greatly about its apprentices. Before I joined I knew nothing about project management, but thanks to the company I have been able to grow and develop into the successful apprentice I am today! I have made many friends and done work I can genuinely say is important and that I'm proud of.
Sell your personality! For me, I found that personality and interpersonal skills are something the company greatly values unique outlooks and an alignment with Babcock's mission. If you can align yourself with the company's mission, then you are sure to succeed!
