I assist with project management and pricing on a day to day basis as well as producing quotes. I am also responsible for a management software that overviews where the site staff are completing work. I have started to contribute to large projects both in the office and on site as well alongside a Contracts Manager.
I have learned and developed multiple skills as I have no construction background prior to working at RPL. I have developed admin and payroll skills as an initial role and within the past few months progressed into project management and pricing. I have enhanced skills in all of these areas and taken all the opportunities I have been offered.
I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme as it is teaching me valuable skills that I can use in all aspects of my career. The company works hard to help me hit the targets that have been set out by the college and ensures that I understand why the skills are useful as well as how to apply them.
I think the programme is well structured by the college however some aspects can be a bit broad. I think a small improvement they could consider is the size of business that candidates work for. As I work for a small business I have gained experience in multiple job roles however a candidate at a larger company may not be that lucky and could struggle to achieve targets.
I receive an incredible amount of support from my employer. It was their idea to have me take on this course and I'm thrilled they saw my potential for it. Within completing assignments and gaining experience I can ask for help or those opportunities and very promptly I will have an answer.
I have received lots of support from the college as and when I have had queries. Some questions have been about specific points I am required to meet and others have been about the course overview. Either way I have been provided with helpful answers and offered additional sessions if I am struggling.
I feel the qualification definitely boosts my confidence within my role as I can better understand what is been discussed in important meetings with both internal and external stakeholders. I also feel much more competent with my daily duties and ready for new challenges that are presented to me.
I have been presented with a few opportunities for professional networking events so far and I can only see the quantity of these increasing. In my first few months I definitely shied away from these events but as I have become more confident in myself I feel much more happy talking about my work and the company as whole.
Yes
Compared to previous jobs I feel extremely valued at RPL. Although the raises that have come from taking on more responsibility are much appreciated, I am constantly reminded that I am doing well within my role and the potential I have to progress my career in construction. Its a genuine pleasure to work with such a caring and hard working team that push me to be the best version of myself.
I would say to focus on showing a keen ambitioned to learn. The company has a lot to offer to help you develop and by showing you'd like to progress any prior learning, or to take on a new skill they can help you achieve this. Most skills are construction specific however there are plenty of opportunities to progress management skills, Business in general and HR skills
