I design and improve components within the MRI scanners we manufacture, as well as tools to support manufacturing processes. Using Siemens NX CAD, I create 3D models and support testing, collaborating with teams across the business, including SCM and procurement, to ensure smooth manufacturing.
I have developed CAD modelling and drawing skills to a high level, along with design for manufacture and assembly, material selection, and gained exposure to FEA. With several years at the company, I have been given autonomy of my own projects allowing me to develop my project management and procurement skills.
I really enjoy my time at work and find the projects I’m involved in both interesting and purposeful. Whilst the majority of the work for my degree and L6 apprenticeship criteria is enjoyable, some tasks can feel like ticking boxes, which I’m less enthusiastic about.
The programme is well-structured with supported progress tracking to make sure you are developing the right Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours to become a well rounded engineer. However, the workload particularly from the degree side can vary, with some quiet periods and others that are more intense. I am lucky that my employer (Siemens Healthineers) has acknowledged this and adapted my workload at work to help during busy periods.
The support I receive from the business is outstanding. My colleagues are empathetic to my role as an apprentice and are always willing to share their knowledge, showing kindness and patience as I learn. My manager offers strong support, and I can openly discuss anything work or university related during our regular 1-2-1s. Any issues raised are always addressed, and additional support or guidance is provided when needed.
The support from my training provider is good, particularly with the workplace coach who helps me track my apprenticeship progress.
The qualification aligns with my job role, equipping me with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform effectively in my position.
Yes, there are social events, team-building activities, and professional networking opportunities, including industry conferences.
Yes
The team of engineers I get to work alongside are phenomenal, both in competence and personality, which is a significant contributor to my positive experience.
I would recommend applying only after thoroughly researching the company and the program to understand the workload and expectations. If you feel it’s a good fit, be proactive, show your intellectual competence, and demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and a solid work ethic.
