As a Slinger, we use lifting equipment such as Slings, Shackles, Tag Lines, etc… to move different things around the Dockyard. We have moved everything from Fenders, Phalanx Guns, Sideboats, and many more things to come.
Yes, have developed my skills in Slinging itself, and through the training and on site work, have got a lot more confident as the course has gone on, and listening skills to make sure to do the jobs correctly.
I love the programme/course, and I can’t wait to expand my knowledge and skills as I progress.
Very well organised. Training is worked around our different projects, and we get to switch to different areas around 4 to 5 months, so have a nice varied day, every day.
Lots of support from Babcock and The Engineering College, whether that’s something to do with the project or anything to do with our assignments and reports.
Lots of support online, and as one of the people who works for The Engineering College lives close by to the Dockyard, he doesn’t mind coming in to help support us too.
A lot of useful information about how to stay safe/health and safety around site and on our jobs. And through the providers previous experience of working within Slinger/Riggers positions.
There is a gym on site which we only pay a small amount for, and we have a week away coming up very soon where we go and do some team exercises before the end of our first year (things like rock climbing, kayaking, etc).
Yes
It is a great place to work, everyone is really helpful and friendly to get on with. And the programme/course helps build you a career, with a job offer at the end of it. Highly recommend working for Babcock!
Just to come in with a positive attitude, the right frame of mind, and the passion to learn and expand different skills, ready for when you pass your apprenticeship. Once in the Dockyard, you can work your way up, and develop new skills if you want to.
