  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Civil Engineering Apprentice, working on a variety of projects and areas within my sub discipline. Day to day work involves the use of software, and report writing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting work, I have learnt and developed a multitude of new skills. The workplace has been great for this, as most days I am learning something new due to the nature of work being varied. I have also had the opportunity to attend lots of training events, and have learnt new skills on my university course.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed my programme so far - time spent in the workplace has been enjoyable as the work is always interesting, and the workplace is also good for socialising. My block weeks at university are a lot of fun and the content is enjoyable to learn. The programme is quite intense, so there is the expectation to spend a lot of time outside of working hours studying, which can sometimes be difficult.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. I have a lot of support within my team at work, including my buddy, line manager, team leaders and other apprentices that I can go to depending on the help I need. There is good co-ordination between my training provider and the workplace, and my team is aiding me to focus on the personal development and improvement of skills that is required for university. There are also meetings with my tutor scheduled throughout year.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive the required amount of support from my employer. There is always support in the workplace when help is needed for work or assignments. I receive some time to attend training events and complete work for my training provider.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from the training provider is good, we have lots of online resources provided to us for the course content, and are able to reach out to the lecturers if we are having any issues. Online support sessions are run frequently outside of time spent on block release.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is a more general course in Civil Engineering, whereas my role at work is quite specified - therefore there is little relation between my course and the work I complete in the workplace. However there are some relevant modules, and hopefully the skills learnt will be used in future - especially with the potential for future rotations to different teams. I find this does not effect how I perform in my role, as the learning I do in the office is mostly sufficient for me to complete my work to a high standard.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Professional networking events are run frequently in the office and nearby, with the opportunity for meeting other early careers or experienced workers. There are multiple sports clubs and other social clubs which run frequently, with great opportunity to meet others from different teams in the office. Socials are also frequently held.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its an international company with good opportunities. The work experience I have gained so far has been invaluable, and the support and environment has been great. The social opportunities also stand out when compared to other apprenticeships, as I do not feel like I have missed out at all and have a great social circle through work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Learn about the company and their values, be honest about your skill set and open to learning new things. Remember that the interview is for both the employer and for you to learn more about the role, and how the company/Apprenticeship operates.
