As a quantity surveyor at Mott MacDonald there are various different tasks I can get involved with based on the different teams you can be allocated to. So far I've been allocated to the buildings team and estimating team. My tasks so far have been: - Completing computational and maths checks. - Helping to create BOQ's. - Creating estimates. - Liaising with contractors. - Reviewing and sending off payment certificates. - Along with other tasks...
I have developed and refined many new skills, both technical and interpersonal skills. Some of those are: - The ability to use software such as Excel and COST X. - Sending out professional emails and messages. - The ability to liaise with other stakeholders. (Improving communication) - Work efficiently as a team and independently.
I enjoy the apprenticeship very much. It has given me valuable insight into many different ways of approaching problems. It has given me the ability to learn as I earn and enjoy myself while doing so with the multitude of opportunities provided through various social events and networking opportunities as well as being given tasks of varying difficulty which tests my intellect, allowing everyday to be different and ever challenging.
My programme is well structured with me being clear on my work-related responsibilities and my educational requirements. I'm supported by my line manager and other work colleagues to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
My employer supports me in every realm. They offer support with health, on the job learning, studies, extracurricular activities, completing my chartership and any other requirements I may have. I've been supported with anything I have asked of them and things I may not have known I may have needed. Overall I feel very valued and supported.
My training provider offers much support. They record seminars so they can be rewatched later or if they've been missed. I have a performance review every 12 weeks which helps to confirm I'm on the right track and gives me the opportunity to ask any questions I may have.
My qualification greatly supports my role. It gives me perspective on what I'm doing day to day and allows me to zoom out of my tasks and see how my tasks affect the wider project.
My employer hosts many extra-curricular activities every month, including networking events, sports activities as well as socials. They also host webinars that allow me to learn more about other roles and how we interact as well as upcoming projects that I may not be involved in.
