  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Technical Manager in a retail setting with sustainability responsibilities in UK retail, my daily tasks would be varied and crucial for integrating sustainability practices into the business. A significant portion of my time would involve overseeing the technical aspects of implementing sustainability initiatives. This could include evaluating and managing policy across different product types, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations specific to the UK and potentially the Leeds area, and monitoring our environmental footprint through data collection and analysis. Internally, I collaborate daily with various departments. I work with the sourcing team to ensure sustainable sourcing of materials and products, aligning with ethical and environmental standards. Discussions with the store operations team would focus on implementing and maintaining sustainable practices at the store level, such as waste reduction programmes and efficient resource management. The marketing team would be a key partner in communicating our sustainability efforts to customers. Externally, my daily interactions would involve liaising with suppliers to assess their sustainability practices and encourage improvements. I might also engage with local Leeds authorities or environmental organizations to stay informed about regional sustainability initiatives and explore potential collaborations. Keeping abreast of the latest sustainability trends and technologies through research and external networking would also be a regular part of my responsibilities. Projects would range from implementing sustainable material solutions for our facilities to optimising manufacturing process for reduced emissions and developing sustainable packaging alternatives.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As a Technical Manager with sustainability responsibilities in retail, my experience has equipped me with a valuable skillset encompassing both technical expertise and a deep understanding of environmental impact. Through conducting environmental audits, I've honed my problem-solving abilities significantly. These audits involve a systematic evaluation of our operations, identifying areas of environmental risk and non-compliance. This process demands meticulous data collection and analysis, the ability to interpret environmental regulations specific to the UK and potentially local Leeds ordinances, and the capacity to diagnose the root causes of environmental issues. I've become adept at critical thinking to assess the severity of findings and prioritise areas for improvement. Furthermore, environmental audits have sharpened my communication and interpersonal skills, as I frequently need to present findings and recommendations to various stakeholders, including senior management and store teams, requiring clarity, diplomacy, and the ability to build consensus for change. My involvement with Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) has provided me with a powerful lens for understanding the holistic environmental impact of our products and processes, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. This has cultivated strong analytical and research skills, enabling me to assess the environmental burdens associated with different choices and identify opportunities for optimization. I've learned to model and interpret complex data related to energy consumption, resource use, and emissions across the entire value chain. This skill allows me to make informed decisions regarding material selection, product design, and supply chain management to minimize our environmental footprint. Moreover, understanding LCA has fostered a systems-thinking approach, recognising the interconnectedness of different stages and the potential for trade-offs. This allows me to develop more comprehensive and effective sustainability strategies for our retail operations. Both environmental auditing and LCA have instilled in me a proactive approach to environmental management and a commitment to continuous improvement.
