  • I am an apprentice economist, who works in DHSC. This includes building models to estimate cost benefit analysis and writing impact assessments.

  • Learnt lots about government policy as well as improved my excel skills and learning power bi.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme especially the work side of it as I find work very enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is quite well organised, as both work and uni talk to each other.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have an apprentice network with grade managers for apprentices as well as an apprenticeship advisor on the uni side.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Apart from the lectures being pre-recorded the uni is good. We have people we can go to with any problems.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Unlike a normal degree the modules are linked to work for example the working with data module or the economic policy module.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have apprentice away days, drinks as well as 5 a side football to name a few.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Government Economic Service to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Very rewarding and interesting work as well as a paid for degree and very valuable work experience.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Government Economic Service?
  • The recruitment is not done by department but rather centrally so don't prepare for a specific department. Learn the civil service code and practice interviews with someone to prepare.
