My job title is eTime and attendance apprentice, under this my duties are described officially as: Managing and maintaining the electronic timekeeping system - which is eTime Working collaboratively with stakeholders, Supporting employees and HR teams with time and attendance, Producing time and attendance reports for the business to ensure compliance with regulations and legislation, Coordinating and managing projects and project documentation, creating/maintaining operating controls and process documentation Administrative tasks to support time and attendance team and data processing
Learnt how to use excel ad formulas developed word and power point skills as well as english and maths from calculating balances and payments regularly and speaking to customers
I enjoy my programme however if not from the amazing support from my manager I don't believe I would have enjoyed it as much, due to issues with the college tutor being on sick leave for the majority of my course, I have been doing college work from home or my manager has allowed me to allocate time for college work
On the college side, my course was structured awfully and it was not explained well to us at all where our end point would be, and why we were doing the work we were given. Rather than explaining modules to us, we were left to figure it out ourselves, thankfully due to the way Cummins structure the business, and my team, myself and other apprentices within the same course were able to discuss college at work and provide guidance to each other.
I received an immense amount of support from my manager; when covering a finance module, she reached out to the CBS finance team and planned a meeting for us where I could understand finance, and get a firsthand experience from someone who works in the department. If I ever needed any of my work hours to review college work, it was almost always given to me and support was always there if needed.
I did NOT receive a lot of support from the actual provider (tutor) as mentioned previously she was on sick leave for the majority of my course, and if I were to ask questions to my tutor, an answer would not be given as we had to stick to HER learning plan, rather than it being changed to suit my learning needs best. If not for my assessor, I would have seriously failed in many modules and found it even more difficult to reach the position I am in now, waiting for my exam dates
I do not think that the course itself links to my apprenticeship, as we cover things such as Finance, a department which I do not work with and probably never will. Other things such as researching my organisation was interesting however I do not see a direct benefit in my role following this course.
There are endless opportunities at Cummins for extra-curricular's. Such as EEEC (Every Employee Every Community) which is a company initiated community service which we are required to complete at least 4 hours every year. These range from visiting schools, career fairs, touring children around Cummins, gardening, building and even more, all of which are chances to build your network due to working with people from all over the business. We also have summer BBQ's which many people attend, as well as lunch time support groups, sporting events, knitting events etc
Yes
I believe Cummins is an amazing company that provides unlimited opportunities to their employees, for example, I will take on a level 4 course following the completion of my level 3, and Cummins may give me the opportunity to take my education further. Due to the large amount of networking activities, I would say Cummins is a very friendly environment and a good place for someone like me to start a career.
I would make sure they are aware of the opportunities at Cummins and explain how it doesn't have to be just a job it can be a place to make friends, personally develop and be part of a wider goal. I would also encourage them to take as many opportunities as possible
