I am an Emission Measurement Technology engineer, responsible for preventative maintenance, calibration and breakdown repair of gas analysers, as well as chemical analysis, gas management and continuous improvement projects.
I have received a foundation degree, and am set to earn an NVQ4 and Bsc Eng in Applied Engineering. On the job I have received training such as breakdown and fault finding courses, chemical analysis courses and there are options for many more areas of training. I have developed my knowledge of emissions, chemistry and other relevant field as well as developing my overall engineering knowledge through academic courses.
I thoroughly enjoy what I do both within my department, as well as within the company as a whole. The team are very close and have a lot of experience so it allows for a good learning environment.
I have lots of responsibilities, but good performance is recognised within the team, and academic achievements are recognised upon completion by the apprentice team. I am relied upon by my team and am a valuable asset to my team leader.
The induction to the course is very good, and each year the apprentice team strive to improve the experience. I have a set training plan in order to achieve the requirements of the apprenticeship, as well as additional training within the department. There is a reasonable amount of work to do and support is usually good. The programme structure is well laid out and explained, making each step of training easy to identify.
Tutors within college are usually reachable when at college, although are sometimes difficult to reach outside of college when in the work placement. Within the foundation degree, there were some excellent lecturers, and some poor ones. Overall I have enjoyed the experience but there have been some frustrating moments.
The team and management provide excellent support, using a skills matrix to plot progress and identify areas for improvement in order to see us trained to the necessary level. We have work based learning managers who we meet regularly in order to monitor our progress and flag any issues.
The salary is very good for someone of my age, and there is a defined scheme for pay rises and bonuses that make it easy to map out progression in the future. My salary is plenty to cover my costs as well as allow some savings. I am located relatively close to site so my travel expenses are low.
The company has a wide array of various events arranged outside of work, including team building activities as well as CSR events to promote the company. There is access to many exclusive deals such as discount for lots of different industries.
Yes
The overall package is fantastic, it is hard work but it provides a very reasonable salary whilst also granting a wide array of training and qualifications, as well as 6 years of work experience. The company is growing and has a very good training plan in place.
Research the company, and various news items relating to it. Look at the company's expected business behaviors and ensure examples are used that demonstrate these. They are looking for motivated people looking to develop.
