As a trainee project planner I plan future construction activities and record the progress of ongoing ones. I am responsible for writing several reports and producing charts, schedules and other visual tools throughout each week.
Laing O'Rourke is funding my education at Salford University on the Constuction Project Management degree. Frequent and varied internal training courses are offered. In addition to construction knowledge, I have developed my personal skills and IT capabilities in my working time.
The work is varied and interesting, keeping me satisfactorily busy and challenged. I have worked with several teams over the past two and a half years, all of which have been diversly different but have all been friendly and supportive.
I am always given recognition for my work and feel valued and appreciated during appraisals, reviews and following the completion of larger individual projects.
There are many opportunities for training and the programme I am enrolled on has several modules which involve spending 2-5 days with the rest of my year group on team-based activities.
Salford University provides me with a tutor who is available if needed to resolve any issues though I have not utilised this support.
The majority of my support comes from my immediate project team members, my mentor and others in the planning function
Due to living with family, my living costs are relatively low and living close to my work place reduces travel costs. My pay is sufficient to allow me to set aside savings whilst also making personal purchases.
There are frequent celebration events held by the company/project and other local community events which the company makes me aware of and sometimes provides discounts and offers.
Yes
I have enjoyed my experience and feel it is unique to the construction industry and Laing O'Rourke. I have been treated fairly and given many opportunities to prove myself and develop.
Research the company and show an interest/passion in what they do. Ask questions to fully understand what the company is about. Try to visit one of the construction sites as this can be very informative and also show commitment and initiative.
