During the work experience we were split into different sectors of the business. My sector was Markets, meaning that I spent the majority of my time on the trading floor with traders learning about what is required to do for their job.
Before the experience, I had little idea about the economy and the effects that one event can have on the whole market. Also, I learnt a lot about how a bank operates and a lot of the inside and outs of it.
I really enjoyed the programme. As I come from a small town with a dream to work in the city, being in the London for two weeks in one of the biggest organisations in the world was a great experience for me.
During the work experience I felt very valued. We were each given a mentor who took time out of their routine to teach us their job as best as they could. We sat with numerous traders and salesmen who were more than happy to help us and didn't look at us like just the students that we are.
The programme was very well organised. Grace and Emily did a fantastic job of making sure everything ran smoothly and everybody the best time that they possibly could.
We didn't have any training from training providers as it was only a two week work experience rather than a year long apprenticeship.
We did have support and trust from J.P. Morgan in the fact that they trusted us to be in their offices, surrounded by important information.
It was an unpaid work experience. However, all of our costs of transport and lunch/meals was provided by the employer so we were in no way out of pocket.
Outside of the daytime activities at the J.P. Morgan buildings, we had opportunities to enjoy our time (not work related opportunities). We were given opportunities to see London which is nice if you are an outsider, by doing things such as going on the London Eye and riverboat cruises on the Thames.
Yes
The work experience at J. P. Morgan is something that I would definitely recommend if you are interested in the world of finance or banking. It gives you a great insight to the life of bankers and the industry itself and has really motivated me to succeed to follow the paths of the workers who I spoke to and worked alongside.
I'm not sure about this as it was selected through the Social Mobility Foundation for the J.P. Morgan experience so I wouldn't know about applying straight to them.
