I work as the warehouse apprentice and my main daily tasks would be to check off and put away the delivery that comes in three days a week, I also pick any outgoing stock such as kitchen and door orders. I also will deal with most of stock transfers from start to end by setting up the order on the computer and then picking it from the warehouse. my main responsibility is too make sure the warehouse is in a good condition so it makes everything easier.
By the end of the apprenticeship I will hopefully have an NVQ in trade business services which could easily come in handy when applying for future jobs, the main skill I have developed would be my confidence as I can feel I can talk to new people a lot more easily.
Working in a warehouse was never at the top of my list when looking for apprenticeship but I still enjoy what I do mostly as I enjoy the people I work with.
I feel very valued by Howdens joinery as I receive a lot recognition from the manager here and the area manager. I am always involved in projects that are happening and always treated equal to everyone else.
my programme was very well organized as from the very start and had a great induction and was told everything that I needed know for the apprenticeship. my mentor comes in at least once a month and we go through all the work that I have been done and that needs doing for the next visit.
I receive a lot of support from the training provider as I stated above my mentor visit at least once a month and makes phone calls to check up and say when they are coming again. I have a phone number and an email from my training provider so I can contact them at any time during the day.
I receive a lot of support from my employer and I get frequently asked about my NVQ and if im still enjoying job, I also got given a business card with the email and phone number of Howdens apprentiship co-oridnator incase I had nay questions that needed answering.
I still live at home so living costs was never a problem and I only live about 5 minute drive from the branch so travel costs isn't really an issue. the salary is good to say its an apprentice wage so I can go to all the football matches with problem with the money.
with the good wage that I was on it wasnt't really a problem do do stuff outside of work with my mates. we sometimes do stuff within the branch such as go out for meals or they are tournaments between areas such as a Go-Karting challenge to win the chance to go to Barcelona.
Yes
I think Howdens is a good company to work for as they are a variety of different roles that will appeal to nearly everyone. the support they and the training provider offer to an apprentice is great.
just enjoy it and work hard as they is nearly always a full time job as a reward at the end of the apprenticeship.
