My role as a quantity surveyor is to calculate the quantities needed for the project. Another role would be to pay sub-contractors for their completed works through the month. Finally, as a quantity surveyor I do manage the costs of the project and make sure everything is going to the budget allocated to the projects and certain jobs.
I have learnt many skills through my traineeship. These skills would include: - Excel development - Communication skills - People skills - Quantification - Measurement
I thoroughly enjoy my traineeship and am progressing on a daily basis. This job makes me want to get up in the morning.
From my experiences in the construction industry, I feel that my colleagues to value me much more due to me being able to spot certain things which some colleagues might not be able to see.
The programme itself is organized. This is due to the objectives we set ourselves to make sure we reach our goals and are always looking to achieve other goals to become better at our roles.
As a group, we receive a lot of support from our providers and also our colleagues who have been in the construction industry for many years. I have learnt so much from their experiences and they are always willing to help and pass on their experience to you.
Laing O'Rourke are always there to provide support when ever asked. There is a personal email to send any request/help needed and somebody would be in contact by either email or somebody would give you a call as soon as they can.
My salary/package is really good. Laing O'Rourke pay for your tuition fees, pay you a salary and also pay me mileage due to me being over the mileage to travel to work.
Yes, we do have a cadet meeting in various parts of the UK to see how we are getting on and do activities as a team bonding. Also Laing O'Rourke do put you on courses to increase your knowledge on certain aspects of the trade. I.e. Health and Safety.
Yes
I would recommend Laing O'Rourke as they are a well known, multinational company which are fantastic. The projects they are involved in are incredible and they do look after you very well.
I would advice people to look into Laing O'Rourke, what projects they have done, what they are trying to achieve and how are they different to other companies. Laing O'Rourke to look for the talented people to work for them but also the strongest candidates would need to be able to work as a team and know how to problem solve as you would constantly be talking to people and overcoming problems.
