I am an IT Specialist working in the Client Centre at Hursley also providing support to the Client Centre in Southbank, London. I set up for sales events that the Client Centre runs, these events usually involve virtual machines with certain pieces of software on. These virtual machines can then be deployed onto laptops and set up in a classroom or space on a server can be allocated for them and they are then logged into remotely.
I have learnt a lot of new skills on the job mainly to do with networking of hardware and images. I have also learnt a lot about VMWare and virtualisation of servers. I have to communicate with customers a lot so my communication skills have increased greatly. The courses I have been on have taught me a lot about technical fundamentals and also about client experiences. I have also booked to go on a Linux Fundamentals course in a couple of months.
I enjoy the people I work with and the people in Foundation as a whole (Apprentices/Grads/Interns). The company culture at IBM is a very positive one and all IBMers are generally nice people. This course has so far exceeded my expectations.
I feel as though I have been given real responsibilities and I am seeing my individual skills being recognised by my manger and a lot of the people I work with.
The programme I am on is very well structured and I am provided with an excellent amount of support throughout my time here.
I receive a very comfortable level of support from my training provider. What I need to do to achieve my qualification has been very clearly laid out to me and the various systems that come into play along the way have been made very clear to me.
I feel incredibly comfortable with the level of support that I have here at IBM. This means support for my learning as an apprentice, support within my day to day role and support with any other issues I may have outside of work.
I am still living at home so my living costs are relatively low but I am very happy with the salary package that we receive and I feel very able to do the things I want to do with my money.
Yes there are lots of opportunities such as the ski trip that has just run. The community of Early Professionals are also very good at organizing social events for us to relax and unwind.
Yes
In my time at IBM I feel as though I have been truly valued and my value is only going to increase as I spend more time here. IBM has taught me how to be a true professional and the culture and the people at IBM are unparalleled.
Be patient (My application process took about 6 months and I have heard of people's taking nearly a year). Try and stand out as much as you can, even now people are telling me this as IBM hires so many people that you need to be a unique person with unique skills and values. Also remember that when applying for IBM you're not competing with everyone else for one job, if they like you, they will take you on.
