  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • - FS Risk Advisory Scholarship Intern (3 placements and I have just completed the 2nd which was 10 weeks long) - Some examples of tasks included making internal training manuals in the Quantitative Advisory Team (valuations and derivatives work) - Work in Financial Crime - had to represent on each graph (over 100) individual bank responses to a major risk survey - Data clean up exercise of a large sample of credentials for development purposes of an internal database - Performed an independent testing of a macro enabled document, she was asked to stress test it in order to identify potential bugs in the performance of the program - Did some very detailed spreadsheet work which required ensuring that quality (look, feel and content) of supporting documents to a client deliverable was of a very high standard

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • - Vastly improved my excel skills - I set up some R software and ran a few scripts which had been developed for a project, without any assistance. I replicated the calculation of summary statistics of our synthetic loss data (mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, count) in Excel - Worked with Bloomberg for the first time -I was able to pick up the basics of Swap pricing using an in house built pricing model and was able to successfully support the team by picking up the basic of Bloomberg for valuations and pricing purposes - In general improved Excel, Work and PowerPoint skills

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • - Been in two main teams throughout my 10 week placement; Financial Crime and Quantitative Advisory Services (in particular the Derivative Valuation team)... so really gained a lot of experience and the skills I gained will be so useful in my future career, as well as my further uni studies - I really felt that I was able to integrate myself and become 'part of the team', despite the short period I worked in each time (max 6 weeks) - I think the culture at EY is so friendly and everyone is valued very highly - everyone who I met and worked with was so helpful and I felt that they wanted me to learn more and gain as much as possible from my internship - I can honestly say that I enjoyed every day at EY, for different reasons due to the varying nature of my work - I was constantly learning and gaining so much experience - it was one of the best opportunities I have ever been given

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • - (As above) - I really felt that I was able to integrate myself and become 'part of the team', despite the short period I worked in each time (max 6 weeks) - I feel that I was able to communicate and build relationships with all whom I worked with, and from the feedback I received, I feel that the work I did was indeed helpful and I gained recognition through the positive feedback I received after my placement - Whether just doing work for people when I was needed, or working within a project team - I think that my work was always useful and this helped to build my confidence and self belief, over the 10 weeks at EY

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • - On the program we are put into sub service lines of Advisory - I am in FS Risk Advisory and then each placement we are able to rotate round within this division - This is supported by your intern manager and the work organisers - and so I was able to spend half my placement in Financial Crime and then, after request, I was able to go into QAS, where I was particularly interested in due to my mathematical interest - By being allocated a counselor and buddy, there is always someone to turn to, if you are to have a question or problem

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • - You get induction week which is a nice introduction to EY and you also get a day dedicated to IT training support, which is very useful - In regard to the actual work, the manager in your team or whoever is providing you with work, is always open for questions and very often I found that the people I worked for within QAS actually taught me a lot of stuff to do with either excel, pricings and general derivatives work

    8/10

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • - A lot of support - as mentioned everyone has an intern manager, counselor and buddy - so there is always plenty of support - I probably got the most support from the actual people I worked with on a day to day basis, as everyone is so helpful and friendly - they really want you to have a great experience at EY

    9/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • - On the scholarship program the salary is the same as on the summer internship program, but you are also provided with London accommodation (this years was in zone 1!), and so I have actually been able to save up some of my wages in order to help my student budget this year

    8/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • - I attended over 10 work socials this year - from a CSR day where we helped the community, a ping pong event to eating up in the OXO Tower Brasserie for the end of placement event and going tot the intern ball... there are plenty of ways to socialise and gain the most out of your time at EY and in London

    9/10

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The people are the central mechanism to the organisation - you always feel valued no matter your previous experience or level in the firm

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • - Research where you want to be in EY and the other service areas it provides to the client - Research into the news - business topics hot at the moment are always good the look at - Practice tests are useful (numerical and literacy tests)
