My current job role is that of a data analyst. I mathematically model and simulate electronic systems and see how our equipment works and behaves with them. My interactions are mainly with my team of five in the lab we work in.
I have gained several new qualifications; NC Electronic Engineering, PEO Mech, PEO Elec, PLTS, ERR and am working towards an HNC in Electronic Engineering. I have furthermore completed a systems requirements engineering course and am possibly starting a company-funded degree in September. The main skills I have learnt are data analysis and 3D modelling.
I work in a fantastic team of five and couldn't ask for a better working culture. My time in Finmeccanica has far exceeded my expectations.
In most of my work placements including my current work placement, I feel greatly valued by my manager and team. There have however been work placements where I have not felt quite as well-valued, due to a lack of work load. In terms of external recognition, I have previously won the 'EEF South East First Year Apprentice of The Year' award.
My programme is well structured and organised. If any training is needed for a task, it can be easily sorted out. We have meetings regarding our progress in the company every 12 weeks. Task delegation is generally given by one's placement manager or team leader.
My employer is my training provider. There is enough help when trying to solve problems, for example the company swiftly moved us to a different college when we were encountering issues there.
There is lots of support from my employer. It is very convenient having my employer as my training provider.
My salary pays enough for me to pay rent, have a car, have an active social life and enjoy a relatively expensive hobby.
There are several opportunities outside of work, provided by work. For example, I have previously attended the Army Reserves Experience day and Self-Defence class in my own time, but with work colleagues. There are also various voluntary opportunities open to apprentices, for instance I have attended several careers events in schools.
Yes
Overall, I've had a fantastic experience here. It has provided me with a well-paid, enjoyable job with good career prospects.
Stand out from other applicants; HR must often read the same thing on every apprentice application, "I go to the gym, I play football..." etc. I joined the RAF Air Cadets at the age of 13, so naturally I had lots of military and aviation-based experience to talk about at the interview. This was of great benefit to me as Finmeccanica specialise in electronic equipment for military aircraft.
