I am on the Technical Apprenticeship for Finmeccanica. I am currently working in the Mechanical Department as a CAD designer. I am responsible for product design ranging from concepts to manufacturing.
I have a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, A HNC Level 4 in Electronics Engineering and an NVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering operations. I am currently gaining an NVQ level 3 in Engineering Technical Services. I have been on Electronic Warfare training sessions, as well as a training course in Creo Parametric 3.0 CAD program. I am in the process of gaining professional registration with IMechE as EngTech.
The work is very varied, especially in the first 3 years when you move around the different placements. I enjoy the trust and responsibility that the company places in me to be involved in important work which is adding value to the company. The programme is very diverse and allows apprentices to find their specialist area whilst learning.
I get regular praise from the work I am involved in, as well as extra activities I participate in. I have received a number of recognition awards for my enthusiasm and dedication to my work.
The apprenticeship is well structured, allowing apprentices to work in many different disciplines before choosing the right career path that you excel in. There are regular reviews to ensure that you are getting the most out of the programme.
I have access to my assessor for my NVQ whenever I need them. All issues are quickly resolved, if there is one. They are always willing to share advise and guidance whenever I ask.
My manager is always there to give advise and guidance on all aspects of my work/apprenticeship. They challenge me by providing me with interesting work, to let me take ownership and responsibility to deliver products.
As a mature apprentice, the salary could be slightly more as I have to travel a good distance from work and have far more financial commitments than most of the apprentices I work with, but it is still a good salary nonetheless.
There are plenty of extra activities to get involved in during the time on the programme. These include attending careers fairs, helping out with schools in the STEM ambassador programme, getting involved in charity work and being invited to prestigious company events.
Yes
The variation of work and the ability to find the right career path whilst you gain experience is far more superior than any other apprenticeship I have seen.
The assessment process can be daunting, but it is definitely worth it. The experience that the company provides will be a great stepping stone to a future career.
