I am a apprentice civil engineer, and currently doing concrete testing. This consists of performing slump tests, and cube crushes to find out the strength of concrete and do a process of paperwork to provide proof of the testing. I interact with site engineers, concrete operatives and site foreman's which is important as communication is key to getting the job done safely.
Better organizing, better communication using the site radios and speaking to both office and site based colleagues and more independence.
Having to sometimes rely on yourself to get the job done but also good teamwork helps a lot and my own knowledge with everything I've learnt gives me an advantage when performing different tasks.
I get praise and feedback for what I'm doing. I make sure if I'm doing it wrong first time that I learn from my mistakes and ask for help.
The structure of the course is organised and is explained well but there are times when my tutors don't explain enough to allow me to get on with assignments. I had the right training and a full Induction at college and on site, I am confident I have the right support so far to progress.
I get enough support from most of my tutors at college, there have been times when I found it hard to start a assignment but all in all, the support has been there when I needed it.
I get support from the person above me (materials engineer) while I'm doing concrete testing and also the concrete technician who I work with most of the time. I don't see my line manager as much as I'm on site majority of the time but when I'm in the office that's an opportunity to talk.
Compared to other companies apprentice wages, this is quite a good one and happy with everything I receive.
I go to some leisure events which are organised by the team at London Bridge Station now and then, so yes there are many opportunities.
Yes
A good company to work for and good pay.
Go in with confidence when being interviewed and be calm when doing the assessment days.
