  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in portfolio management in Mayfair at RBS. i deal with the credit side of things in the relationship department. So, when a relationship manager goes out to meet a customer for a new deal or something, my teams role is to make sure they have the correct paperwork to go and see the customer with! On top of this my team has to look after the customers, in regard to making sure the customers accounts are all in order, and make sure if a customer is over drawn it wont be for too long!!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, i have definitley developed my confidence whilst working in RBS. The ammount of responsibility you get surprised me in a good way, as i only just left school after doing my GCSE's i feel alot more independent and 'grown up' which is a really good feeling! I also have learnt so many new skills and have learnt so much information on my qualification that i am doing (equivalent to an A level, in finance) about mortgages... banking... and finance (the stuff that you dont learn at school but need to know!) So that has been really good aswell.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my programme, but with anything theres positives and negatives! The benefits are, you're earning whilst learning and gaining qualifications for your CV and ontop of that you are gaining the experience that employers look for if you want to move on from RBS some point down the line! You also get to meet a range of different people from apprentices of all ages, and extremely important people of the banking world, which is exciting. The negatives for me was having to grow up so quickly, which in the end is a massive positive, but sometimes i got myself down about it and felt clueless at times because theres so much you dont know and you have to get used to different situations very quickly! But that is what you get with any first job you get and coming into a company like this at my age (16) is an amazing opportunity and i would recommend it to anyone!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I feel very valued by RBS, as the bank at the moment want young minds, for new ideas as we are the new generation of the working world and they know they need our fresh ideas. So i feel that they are grateful and very interested in getting to know the apprentices and are excited about our future careers with the bank.
