  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Portfolio Manager, Writing reports to credit and various other places. Interacting with the relationship manager to approve new and increased borrowing. Annually reviewing each customer and suggesting new ways for them to borrow/ help them with cash flow issues

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Professional Bankers Certificate, Level 3 in providing financial services, GPL modules. Communication skills are a key part of the job and I feel like they are constantly developing and improving. Report writing is also another key factor which is improving steadily

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme a lot because of the people I work around and the type of role I am in. I like talking to customers and all the different teams in the bank. Report writing is also enjoyable as no two reports are ever the same and you have to constantly problem solve and adapt

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • I feel valued due to being given increasing responsibility in the role and making the connections with others. I also feel valued due to being able to see the work I am doing actually help the customer and the people I support. Also being given more complicated work shows the trust that has developed

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Told about deadlines a couple weeks before, deadlines are always announced where there is little time to meet them. Structured deadlines that are not flexible and individual to the people that are sitting the programme. Everyone is expected to work at the same pace and there is no individuality.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive all the support required due having many emails for people that will help with queries. I can also ask anyone I work alongside to help me with issues and questions I have due to their vast knowledge of the subjects

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support due to having a "buddy" who I can ask all my questions to and help me along the way. It also helps that the people I work alongside have already sat the exam I am sitting and so they have a good knowledge of the subjects covered and the questions asked

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary meets my needs well and is a good salary for someone of my age, however I think an apprenticeship should be classed as further education for tax reasons as technically it is classed as further education school wise so why not tax wise. Also being 17 and being in the same tax bracket as people that are a lot older and have more than one income in their household

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of opportunities to network with the other apprentices and to meet up and have a chat about all the things that they have been doing and how they are enjoying it so far. I feel this helps because it makes you see that you have people in the same situation that are able to provide support
