  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is apprentice technician for product assurance. My day to day activities include communicating with external suppliers and managing material. I also carry out inspection and auditing work. I am responsible for looking after all my own projects and ensuring they run as smoothly as they possibly can.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained a HNC qualification in engineering systems. I am currently in the process of obtaining my HND in engineering systems and also getting my SVQ Level 3 Completed. I have been on several training courses including health and safety and software awareness sessions.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work I do is important which to me personally makes the job enjoyable. The team I work with make me feel welcome and part of their group which makes the scheme even better. The programme exceeded all my expectations, its far better than I could have pictured it coming into the role.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Leonardo?
  • I feel highly valued as a part of finmeccanica, the work I do helps my department and means that there is not as much pressure on individuals. I get recognition when performing tasks over and above what is expected on me and with external tasks I am always made to feel appreciated.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured, there is a placement plan laid out from the first day to follow as well as set progress reviews, there is always support and training available upon entering new areas of the business. The college work was always well organised and classes were set out well from the first day.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The lecturers in college are always offering help and assistance if they can, they provide instructions and are always keen to help students in any way they feel would benefit them. They are willing to give up their own personal time to assist and ensure students are clear about the various subjects.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • there is always support available and I feel comfortable approaching my manager with nay issues or questions I have. My supervisor is always asking if I need assistance or if he can help me in any way so there is always support from people working within my team as well. Any problems are always handled well, professionally, quickly and so that there are no outstanding problems.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary I one of the best for the apprenticeships in the city, its a competitive wage that goes up as well as long as my manager is satisfied with my progress. It meets all my living and traveling costs. I have enough money to get myself through the month while maintaining a good social life.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are several company events such as quizzes, dances, nights out. There are also things like football leagues and tournaments which allow you to socialise with your co-workers. There is charity activities which can be done through the company as well. The company is also heavily involved with local schools so theres always activities to help out with there.

  • 9. Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Its an award winning apprenticeship which is a better alternative to university. The programme gives you excellent qualifications and a very good wage to live off of. It is an excellent opportunity to get your career started in one of the many types of apprenticeships the company offers.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
  • Be honest in your application, take the time to read all the questions and ensure you have the required qualifications. you will need to prove your skills at an assessment centre so be prepared for group activities and also individual challenges.
