As a laboratory analyst apprentice I get eight monthly rotations between three labs. Generally on a day to day basis I perform routine testing for the release of batches after production which ensures that the quality of the products meet the specification for the market. I have been trained in a number of tests across the labs which makes each day really varied.
I am working towards a foundation degree in chemical science and after the three years there is an option to spend an extra two years studying to gain a full Bachelor’s degree. I have developed basic laboratory skills as well as learning new skills such as using the bespoke automated equipment used at GSK. Opportunities from STEM events have allowed me to develop my soft skills such as presenting and leadership.
I love the apprenticeship programme as being able to gain industrial experience as well as studying towards a nationally recognised qualification is an amazing opportunity.
I feel extremely valued by the people I work with, and we are treated in the same way as the laboratory analysts. In fact we are provided with opportunities to showcase our potential and get regular recognition from the mangers for any outstanding work we do. For example, I have been a part of some critical projects as a result of showing my ability and attention detail.
The programme is generally well structured with a guaranteed study day a week and more being offered should we have a deadline or exams. Generally the eight monthly rotations are adhered to however occasionally they can be altered to meet the company’s needs which can mean that we often spend less time in one of the labs. Having said that, every effort is taken to ensure we get the time back in the labs.
We attend a residential week at university once a year to perform our practical work where the tutors are available to answer any questions. Generally the tutors are difficult to get in touch with via email however the apprentices in the year above have been really helpful over the past year in explaining things that are unclear with university work.
We have monthly meetings with our local manager to discuss any training requests or any concerns we might have in the lab. The manager also gives regular feedback on our performance in these meetings. Each apprentice is also allocated a mentor with whom we meet once a month to discuss more general concerns for example regarding university work and personal issues. Generally we receive a lot of support from the managers.
The salary is good considering I am employed as an apprentice. There are six monthly pay rises and an annual bonus dependent on personal development. We are also offered the perks of permanent staff such as shares, pension, tax free holidays, private healthcare, corporate discounts etc. The best thing is that at the end of the scheme we do not have a student debt!
The social aspect of working at GSK is incredible and has exceeded my expectations. There are number of young people who work in the laboratories and we regularly arrange social events ourselves, and there are also company events such as the annual Christmas party. Other things on offer are the social club and the gym which we can become a member of. Apprentices are often asked to represent the company at career fairs at local schools as well as hosting open evenings to promote the scheme.

GSK is a leading global pharmaceutical company with a really respectable reputation. GSK values and invests a lot of time and money into the apprenticeship scheme and managers provide us with opportunities to develop into the future leaders of the company.
Research all the different types of apprenticeship on offer (as there are loads!), attend apprenticeship open evenings and ask questions. This will help you decide on which apprenticeship you’re most interested in. With respect to the application process, take your time and don’t stress! The assessment day is an opportunity for GSK to get to know you but just as much an opportunity for you to get to know the company therefore there is a pretty chilled vibe to the day.
