My job title is Software Engineer I have just finished my initial training period and am just starting on my first project. I don't have any specific daily tasks but so far on the project we've been asked to do some things and each day we report to our team leader and talk through what we've achieved and if we had any difficulties, and what we're going to do the next day. We have regular chats with our line manager to help make sure we're progressing as we should be.
In my first 8 weeks I learnt Java and SQL, and completed an exam for my degree on each of them. I'm now learning JavaScript and React, as well as a few other tools that we use on this project. I feel I have learnt and developed every day since joining Capgemini.
I have enjoyed it greatly. I think there have been times when we've learnt everything at a fast pace I felt like I'd struggle to keep up but I've not had any problems and I've had great fun doing my work. I have been working with some great people and the atmosphere here is amazing. Everyone here seems to enjoy what they do.
Our line manager has shown a great interest in our development and it is clear that the company has invested heavily in us and want to see us become a success story.
The first few days of induction was clear and well organised. The programme so far has been well structured, and we have been given a clear outline of how we should progress during the rest of it. There are several avenues for support and the mentors are always available to ask any questions.
Our tutors on the first module were able to help with any issues we needed regarding the course content, and our programme co-ordinators help with any administration or other kinds of issues, and are easy to approach and speak to about anything. On our projects we can usually ask anyone a question and they'll either help us or point to someone who can. I've not had any problems being able to seek support when needed.
They give us lots of support, our programme co-ordinators are usually the first port of call but if we need to ask our manager for anything, they will usually do what they can to help.
I took a huge pay cut to start this job and I find the salary barely meets my living costs but I knew what I was signing up for and have no complaints. Any expenses we have are reimbursed so I have no issues with work costs. We get regular pay reviews so I expect my salary will quickly rise to a higher level.
The company do several events, I've volunteered to help with couple. They also strongly encourage getting involved in the community and taking part in local events.
Yes
There is a great working atmoshphere and the training is of a very high standard. I have enjoyed every minute of my short time with the company.
For interviews and in the assessment process don't get too hung up on what you think you can or can't do. What the assessors are most interested in is how much you enjoy IT and how keen you are for a role in this industry. Also, don't be afraid to show your personality. The onboarding process is really good, they will do everything they can to make it as simple as possible for when you start and if you have any questions they are easy to contact.
