  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Electrical apprentice. We do both theory lessons and practical lessons to help us gain an understanding of what is required of us on station. We cover various different subjects including batteries, electrical actuators, rotating plant and switchgear, to name a few. At the end of each subject, we must complete a test. This shows that we have a basic knowledge of the subject. There is a class leader who is responsible for delivering the safety message and completing the register. The class leader changes every week which allows everyone to have some responsibility.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • At the end of our apprenticeship we will have completed our NVQ level 2 and 3. We will also have a BTEC. In addition to this, once we are back at station, we have the opportunity to complete an HNC. In our first two years, we have various Lifeskills lessons and trips. The lessons include communication and presentation skills, First Aid, sexual health, equality, budgeting and mortgages, to name a few. In first year, we have the chance to go to Budapest, Berlin and Lyon. In second year, we have the opportunity to go on the "Crossing Borders" trip, where the aim is to cross as many borders in Europe as possible in six days.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EDF?
  • I feel suitably valued by eDF Energy. We are issued with a "positive AAR" when we have done some exceptionally good. This is a way of eDF Energy showing their appreciation towards us. We are also encouraged to do the best we can in everything we do.

  • This apprentice scheme is very well structured. The training and support we receive is second to none. Each station has an Apprentice Coordinator who looks after the apprentices. The Apprentice Coordinator ensures that we are on track and helps us with any issues we have.

  • The support we receive from our training provider is sufficient. If we have any issues, there are a number of people we can speak to for advice. The instructors always ensure we understand everything before we complete any tests. The instructors are also all very approachable.

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an amazing company to work for. The opportunities I have had over the last two years and the support we receive from the company is insane! I would recommend this apprenticeship to anyone as it is the best thing I have ever done. I am a completely different person from to the person I was two years ago!
