I am a mechanical apprentice at Torness power station. 4 days a week I carry out maintenance activities with a trained technician and attend college once a week, on day release.
Since starting my hand skills have improved massivly and I am also far more confident as all apprentices are activly encouraged to challange anything that they see as a risk or for potential improvements.
I have really enjoyed working at torness, and actually enjoy work most days. The experience of going down south for the 1st 2 years of the apprenticeship was a great experience.
I feel that edf do genuinlly beleive that my colleages and I are the future of the company. They are also very supportive of any issues that arrise which also shows that they care about the welfare of their workforce.
The programme does feel very organised, sometimes a little too much, like the 2 years down south on a navy base. But on the whole, a very well planned out apprenticeship.
My training is now provided by edf and I am trained constantly by them to bring me up to the standard that they require me to be at to come out of my time.
EDF have very a very good support system in place, which I have 1st hand experience of. It worked wonders for me and I would recomend anyone to work for them as they really do look after staff.
My salary is more than enough for me as I still live at home and have a very short drive to work. I would struggle if I was having to pay rent as the area around the station is quite expensive for renting.
Once I've completed my apprnticeship I'll have a skilled trade and be able to work just about anywhere in the world due to the skills and qualifications that EDF have given me. So Yes.
Yes
As I said earlier, good to their staff and always put safety 1st. Additionally, I would say that it is a very secure job compared to many of the small businesses that are in the surrounding area.
Learn about the company and about how they opperate. Develop your personal skills and practice interveiws as many young people seem to stuggle with interveiws due to the a lack of experience.
