My role title is Audit Associate, this involves working in the audit department, providing audit services to our clients. On a daily basis my role involves working at the client site with other members of the audit team (they vary in size from 2 to 6 in my experience) gathering information from the client and performed audit procedures. Although all team members each have their own areas of responsibility for any given job, we are working together in order to deliver on time. This allows me to gain experience in different area, varying in complexity, developing my independent skills, but also allows me to work in a team environment where support is on hand when needed.
Whilst training on the job, I am also taking exams towards the ACCA qualification - meaning that I will be a chartered accountant by the end of my training contract. Internal training courses are also provided in order to develop the skills required for our specific roles. This combination has meant that I have a rounded skill set.
I really enjoy working in a team environment and therefore my role is quite well suited. I am also quite an analytical person, making the day to day work I perform equally well suited. The company culture is one of self lead development and the puts emphasis on the value held within the knowledge and skills of each employee - this creates a positive working environment.
I feel that I am valued as an individual but also valued in terms of the work I produce. Given that the team are working as a unit to deliver to a deadline, everyone's contribution is valued as the results depend on everyone. Also, Grant Thornton provide incentives and rewards throughout the year to reward hard work.
Induction training is extensive to allow you to begin working in the department successfully right from the beginning, this is a draining process but a necessary one. Being able to really contribute to a team within weeks of beginning work is quite unique. There is also a good mentor system in place when there are concerns to be discussed. The balance of studying a few days at a time for a number of months, whilst working in between is a hard balance to strike, but it manageable.
The tuition, revision and support provided at Kaplan is brilliant and gives you all the resources required to successfully complete exams.
A dedicated line manager is assigned and they are a constant point of contact, providing support and guidance. In general, Grant Thornton is a support company, given that we work in small teams with differing people week after week, my internal network is extensive and therefore I feel supported by a wide range of people whom I could turn to if required.
I think the salary received for this programme is appropriate for the general costs associated with it - the location, the volume of travel involved and the impact on social commitments given the additional time spent travelling etc.
There are many social activities organised throughout the year - most notably the annual football tournament involving all UK offices. There are also voluntary opportunities such as the annual Give and Gain day.
Yes
The firm continually provides opportunities for development, in an environment with like minded people.
The application process may seem lengthy but it is worth the effort. The interviews and assessment days are designed to allow you to show your best characteristics and for those with the competencies that are most sought after to show them. I wish I had been told that there really are no trick questions, all questions asked at the interview are to allow you to sell yourself, an interview is not the time for modesty.
